That's right, FREE! We at JASRI believe that the power and beauty of taiko should be accessible to everyone. So come one, come all, and experience this unique cultural phenomenon. It’s a chance for our community to experience the rich cultural tradition of Japan in a vibrant and exciting way. And it’s a great opportunity to visit the shops and restaurants in quaint Bristol, RI. Spend the day and come to the concert.

But what exactly is taiko drumming?

The word "taiko" itself means "drum" in Japanese, but it encompasses so much more. Taiko drumming is a high-energy performance art that blends music, dance, martial arts, athletics, and rich cultural tradition. Imagine a group of skilled drummers, dressed in vibrant attire, moving in perfect sync as they strike massive taiko drums. The powerful beats reverberate through the air, creating a mesmerizing spectacle that will leave you exhilarated. Get ready for a sensory experience unlike any other. Imagine a high-energy performance art where intricate rhythms meet booming sounds and synchronized movements.

Did you know?

Taiko drums can produce incredibly powerful sounds, reaching over 130 decibels – that's on par with a jet airplane! In ancient Japan, these powerful sounds were even used to communicate with soldiers on the battlefield. Taiko drums themselves are an impressive sight. These massive instruments come in a variety of shapes and sizes, each with its own unique sound. When struck with specially designed mallets called “bachi”, taiko drums can produce deep, resonating sounds that can travel for miles.

Modern taiko performances often incorporate energetic vocalizations called "kakegoe." Think of it as a rhythmic chanting that adds another layer of drama and excitement to the performance.

A Festival Favorite!

Last year's taiko drumming performance at the Black Ships Festival was a smash hit. Families spread out blankets, enjoyed picnics, and were completely captivated by the electrifying energy of the performance.

This year promises to be even bigger and better!

This year, we're excited to welcome ShinDaiko Taiko Ensemble back for another unforgettable evening.
