Calling all curious explorers! Did you know Rhode Island and Japan have a special friendship that goes back a long way? This summer, the Black Ships Festival, organized by the Japan-America Society of Rhode Island (JASRI), is teaming up with the amazing Rogers Free Library (RFL) in Bristol to celebrate this connection with some fun pre and post festival events!
The Rogers Free Library: A Community Hub for Learning
The Rogers Free Library (RFL) has been a cornerstone of Bristol since 1877 . They offer books, programs, and activities for all ages, and this summer, they're helping us explore the fascinating culture of Japan!
Let's Set Sail for Japan with Stories & Crafts!
Before the Black Ships Festival arrives in Bristol (August 16th-18th), the RFL is hosting two exciting events to spark your child's interest in Japan:
Japanese Folk Tales Storytime: Join storyteller Steve Shakespeare on Saturday, August 10th (10:00 AM - 11:00 AM) for a magical morning of Japanese folktales in the RFL Children's Room! Learn about Koinobori, the colorful carp kites that symbolize strength and resilience, and even make your own to take home! This event is perfect for children ages 0-8.
A Talk with Dr. Matthew Perry: Did you know a Rhode Islander is celebrated as a hero in Japan? On Wednesday, August 14th (2:00 PM - 3:00 PM), Dr. Matthew Perry, a descendant of the famous Commodore Matthew Perry, will be at the RI Veterans Home to chat about his ancestor's role in opening up trade between the United States and Japan. This is a great opportunity to learn about a piece of history that connects our state to Japan!
Calling All Creative Minds! Learn a New Skill!
Want to try something new and cool? Join JASRI at the RFL for a Japanese Calligraphy Craft Night on Monday, August 26th (6:00 PM - 8:00 PM). Expert artists will be there to guide you as you explore the beautiful art of Japanese writing. Registration is required, so be sure to call ahead!
