What Rhode Islander is considered a Hero in Japan for opening the doors of trade to the United States?

Rogers Free Library hits the road with Dr. Matthew Perry, a Bristol Descendant who will talk about "Commodore Matthew C. Perry USN: Military Diplomat with Japan" at the RI Veterans Home.


The signing of the Treaty of Kanagawa marked the beginning of a new era in Japanese history. It was the first time that Japan had opened its doors to the outside world, and it had a profound impact on the country's culture and economy.

 

The friendship between Japan and the State of Rhode Island has continued to grow in the years since the signing of the Treaty of Amity and Commerce. Today, there are strong economic, cultural, and educational ties between the two countries. Come and find out more from local historian, Dr. Matthew Perry
